Instagram first brought their own light app in 2016. The company later removed the app from the Play Store in the spring of last year. But now Instagram has changed once again.
The Facebook-owned company has announced the launch of a new Lite app for 180 countries.
Some new features are being added to Instagram's Lite app. In addition, the file size is also increasing. The company, which owns Facebook, also said that the app is coming for the Android platform. Technology site The Verge mentions that the United States is one of 180 countries.
Downloading a normal Instagram app requires 30 MB of free space on the device. On the other hand, it takes only two megabytes to download Instagram's Lite app. Earlier, there was only 563 kilobytes of free space to download the light app. The size of the app has increased in this version.
Instagram still has no plans for an iOS version of the Lite app.
Not only the size of the app has increased, new features have also come. Users will now be able to send messages directly from the Lite app. It will also be possible to post video records. You can also see the Reels tab on the homepage of the app. However, the Shopping tab is omitted.
Instagram Lite product manager Nick Brown said "their team has no plans to bring shopping tabs to Instagram Lite." He further says that ‘Reels’ is currently being used by many in India. That's why they thought of putting the Reels tab in the Lite app.
Users will not be able to make their own reels from the Lite app. Not only this, the Lite app does not have any 'Augmented Reality Face Filter'. However, stickers, gifs and text will be seen.
For now, there will be no ads in the Lite app. Brown, however, says his team is "committed to bringing the whole suite of monetization tools."
